Case Study 9

Case Study 9: A 27-year-old, athletic young man has an intense fear of needles. He tries to rationalize his fear by explaining that he is just being cautious and protecting himself from acquired immunodeficiency disease syndrome (AIDS). He realizes that his fear is irrational but is unable to control it. The patient has fainted twice in the past when his blood was drawn during a physical examination. He becomes extremely anxious at the sight of a needle and worries for days before an appointment with his physician or dentist.
This athlete has an anxiety phobia to injections which is also called Belonephobia. He has panic attacks and has fainted whenever he comes in sight of an injection. He is also hesitant about going to the physician or dentist's office. It is also known that he has this phobia because he himself realizes that this fear of injections has gotten out of control. He might have had someone in his family history have a bad encounter with needles.
A mode of therapy for this man is to reassure him that the injection will not cause any harm to him. Also tell him that the injection is sanitary and it will only help him get better.

Kurt Cobain's Acute Depression

Kurt Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington on February 20, 1967. He started taking interest to music at a very young age. When he was about 8 years old, his parents had gotten a divorce which about that time his personality started to change. His life came down to living with each parent for every other month or year, or even with other relatives. He was constantly abused and bullied by his fellow wrestling team and homophobics just because his friend was gay. That made him believe that he himself could be gay. He later dropped out of school because of lack of credits and his mother gave him an ultimatum to leave or get a job. He was forced out of his house and was forced to live in places like under bridges, his mother's basement, friend's houses etc. Also, most of his life he suffered from bronchitis. In 1986 he created the band Nirvana. In 1989 he and Courtney Love met and bonded through drug use.
His acute depression led to many suicide attempts. Cobain had a gun collection during when his wife wife pregnant and he tried to kill himself with one. But, oddly enough, his emotional stage was the thing the influenced his music and made Nirvana very popular at that time. Later on April 5, 1994 he finally succeeded in killing himself.
I feel that Kurt's childhood caused him to acquire this acute depression. I understand that the impact of his parents' divorce made a huge impact on his life, and he channeled this into his music. He had a rough life, and he took it out on himself.
